Town of Vila Franca de Xira 

The flag and coat of arms are two symbols that identify our city. 

Vila Franca de Xira is a beautiful town located in the district of Lisbon, 

situated on the right bank of the Tagus River. It has plains, marshes and 

agricultural facet related to horses and bulls. 

It has about 18,400 inhabitants. 

Gastronomy 

As regional desserts we have tigelada and candies beans and eggs. 

Vila Franca de Xira receives many tourists for its culinary culture that is 

linked to fishing and farming. 

In March and April, the restaurants offer tasty bread soup with fried shad roe. 

During the weekends of November, come to restaurants taste several traditional 

dishes such as Roast Cod with Torricado, the Stewed Chicken, Rabbit's Garden, 

the Lamb Stew ... 

POPULAR FESTIVALS 

The party "Colete Encarnado" takes place the first weekend of July weekend. 

During the first week of October the old "Feira de Outubro", today called Craft Fair. 

HERITAGE 

Vila Franca de Xira has several important monuments.  

- Igreja da Misericórdia de Vila Franca de Xira, 

Temple founded in the sixteenth century, within which loom important works of 

religious art.  

- Pelourinho de Vila Franca de Xira  

It is a monument Manueline topped with armillary sphere, symbol of the arms D. Manuel. 

- Convent of St. António

Founded in 1402, this religious building is intrinsically linked to the family of 

Athayde, who were due to major restoration works to the XV century séc.XVII.  

- Church of the Martir Santo - 

This church was founded by King Sebastian in 1576, due to the "Great Plague" of 1569, 

disaster that resulted in the construction of several shrines dedicated to St. Sebastian.  

- Palace of Farrobo  

Built in the XIX century. It belonged to the 1st count of Farrobo. The palace included 

a small theater where they arrived to act Italian opera companies. 

- Milestone of Vila Franca de Xira 

Built in 1788, by order of Queen Maria I, is classified as a Public Interest.

NOTABLE PEOPLE OF VILA FRANCA DE XIRA 

- He loved art, painting, sculpture, glazing, carpentry ... investigating and studying 

areas for later writing books. [Reynaldo dos Santos, Writer, physician and art 

historian (1880-1970)] 

- [Jose Pereira VanZeller Palha (1895-1978)], 

The creator of "Colete Encarnado ", one of the most important celebrations of our city.  

- Antonio Alves Redol writer, was one of the most important people in our city.

- Alvaro Guerra was an important Portuguese writer, politician, diplomat and journalist.
