Christmas in Portugal
Our Christmas
At Christmas we decorate our homes with Christmas tree and the crib.
At this time, when we go to theSerra da Estrela , we can go skiing, snowboarding and sledding.
We spend Christmas night with our family.
That night we eat cod, turkey, bolo rei, sonhos and arroz doce.

The main tradition in our country is the family meeting for supper at the night of of December 24, Christmas Eve.
We usually eat cooked cod with potatoes and cabbage drizzled with olive oil, and various sweets for dessert like: bolo rei, sonhos, filhoses, rabanadas, arroz doce, tronco de Natal, among others.
The houses are decorated with Christmas tree and nativity scene.
For children it’s the best day of the year because it's time for exchanging gifts.
At midnight, while the children play with new toys, the adults go to midnight mass.
On December 25, Christmas Day, it is tradition to eat roast lamb, turkey, or make use of the leftovers from supper, using the cod to the traditional "roupa velha".
Christmas in Portugal is in the winter, therefore, in some parts of the country in northern Portugal, the first flakes of snow begin to fall .
In our country, the only place where we can practice various kinds of winter sports is in the Serra da Estrela. We can snowboarding, skiing or sledding.
Being a tourist area, Serra da Estrela offers several traditional products such as cheese, honey, wool coats and dogs.
People say, in my country, that Christmas should be every day and we totally agree!

The Christmas season is magical! We celebrate the birth of Jesus, so it is the family feast.
At the beginning of December we make Christmas decorations.

The streets are adorned with lights, in our homes we do the Christmas tree and nativity scene.
Here in Vila Franca de Xira it doesn’t snow, therefore we can not do winter sports. But some of us enjoy the Christmas holidays and travel to the Serra da Estrela and there we can practice them.

After supper we exchange gifts with our family and we put one shoe on the crib so that Santa Claus leaves a gift there, that we open in the next morning when we wake up.

Most students spend holidays at home, but others travel to the Algarve, Madeira, Brazil and the Serra da Estrela.
The Serra da Estrela has a lot of snow, which allows us to make dolls and sports such as skiing, sledding and some jokes, snowboard and ... Live Christmas.

In our country, people usually celebrate Christmas with family and exchange gifts. Christmas in my country
At this time of the year family members who are abroad come to Portugal to meet their relatives.
On Christmas Eve, December 24th, family sits together to eat the typical dishes of Christmas time, such as cod with potatoes and cabbage, turkey, bolo rei(cake with candied fruit, and other friel cakes like “filhoses, sonhos and rabanadas(fried bread with cinnamon and sugar”.
Some people exchange gifts at midnight and others await the morning of 25th to do it.
To celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, people go to Midnight Mass and kiss the baby Jesus.
The streets and shops are filled with life and colour, decorated with lights.
In my hometown, Vila Franca de Xira, it doesn’t usually snow, but in the Serra da Estrela(the highest mountain in Portugal – 2000metres), it snows a lot, this time of year.
Many people go there to enjoy the beautiful scenery and have fun. Na neve podemos fazer ski, snowboard, andar de trenó, fazer bonecos de neve e atirar bolas de neve uns aos outros. There we can go skiing, snowboarding, sledding, making snowmen and throwing snowballs at each other.
I love Christmas in my country.

Our Christmas traditions
O Natal comemora-se no dia 25 de Dezembro. Christmas is celebrated on December 25. Algumas semanas antes, começamos os preparativos: decoramos a nossa casa com enfeites de Natal, todos nós ficamos muito felizes quando construímos a árvore de Natal eo presépio. A few weeks before we began preparations: decorate our house with Christmas ornaments, all we are very happy when they built the Christmas tree and nativity scene.
O Natal é um momento especial para todos nós, pois na véspera de Natal, dia 24 de Dezembro, a família reúne-se para conviver e partilhar momentos de alegriaChristmas is a special moment for us all, because on Christmas Eve, December 24th, the family meets to socialize and share moments of joy. Nessa mesma noite realizamos a Ceia de Natal onde se costuma comer o prato tradicional: bacalhau cozido com batatas e couves. That same evening we held the Christmas meal where we usually eat the traditional dish: baked cod with potatoes and cabbage. Depois de jantar, para a sobremesa, costumamos saborear deliciosos coscorões, sonhos, filhoses, bolo-rei, azevias, fatias douradas, aletria… After dinner, for dessert, we usually taste delicious coscorões, sonhos, filhoses, bolo-rei, azevias, fatias douradas, aletria…
No final da Ceia de Natal, algumas famílias vão à missa do Galo que se celebra à meia-noite. At the end of Christmas dinner, some families go to Midnight Mass which is celebrated at midnight. Também temos a tradição da troca de presentes. We also have a tradition of exchanging gifts.
O Natal festeja-se no Inverno, que é uma estação do ano muito fria e chuvosa. Christmas is celebrated in winter, which is a season too cold and rainy. Cai neve em algumas zonas do nosso país, nomeadamente na Serra da Estrela, que nesta altura do ano é um grande centro turístico e onde se podem praticar vários desportos de Inverno, entre eles o Ski eo Snowboard. Snow falls in some areas of our country, especially in Serra da Estrela , which at this time of year is a major tourist center and where you can practice different winter sports, including the Ski and Snowboard.
O Natal é tempo de partilha, paz, amor e alegria, por isso é uma quadra festiva que nós adoramos celebrar. Christmas is a time for sharing, peace, love and joy, so it's a festive season that we love to celebrate.
