Christmas in Portugal

Christmas Traditions

In our country, people usually celebrate Christmas with family and exchange gifts. The family gathers for dinner on Dec. 24 for cooking cod with potatoes and cabbage, which is one of the traditional dishes of the feast of Christmas. This time of year there are also several traditional desserts, such as the bolo-rei, the rabanadas, the tronco-de-natal, the sonhos, the filhoses and the azevias.
On Christmas Eve some people at midnight go to midnight mass.
In Portugal it is winter, so it is rains and it’s cold, here snow falls only on the highest point of our country, which is the Serra da Estrela.
In Portugal it does not snow a lot, we have no tradition in winter sports. To be able to practice some, we need to go to the Serra da Estrela.
